Creating a healthy home with safe & clean home, skin and beauty products
Hi, friends! I’m super excited to talk about “cleaning” up my home today. I’m talking safe, clean home products. A few weeks back I was having some skin issues. I’ve always had sensitive skin, but this little bout was much different. My legs were crazy itchy and little eczema spots started flaring up. I would itch my poor legs while I was sleeping until they were raw (gross, I know). The corner of my lip was also cracking. At first I didn’t think much of it (hello, dry Midwest winters). But it got worse and worse and became so incredibly itchy and swollen. Not only was it painful and annoying, it made me super self conscious. I did what anyone would do and Google searched about every holistic remedy and potential cause. I ended with an overwhelming amount of ideas to “fix” me and between the colloidal silver and manuka honey, probably spent over $100 on stuff to alleviate my issues.
Of course, none of which really worked that well.
What I did find in my hours of scrolling was that some of the products I was using could be irritating the problem. I began opening my cabinets and skimming through all the product ingredient labels and was floored. Many of my “green” and “clean” products had very harmful ingredients in it. One of the biggest perpetrators was an ingredient called: Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS), a known skin-irritant. SLS was in my “organic” toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, face cleaner, “green” counter top cleaner and dish soap and my “sensitive-skin” laundry detergent. I mean, seriously. All the things I use on my skin had this horrible, irritable substance in it. Sad.
That being said, I did TONS of research on safe, clean home products that I could switch out. I also did an overhaul of a lot of my skin and beauty products. Why? Truthfully, our skin is our largest organ. What goes on it (and what it pulls inside) needs to be good for us – not laden with chemicals, additives, hormone-disruptors or even cancer-causing ingredients. No thank you. It was an investment for sure, but an investment I needed to make (and one that’ll pay back over and over again). I’ll be sharing more on this soon!
So, here are a few of my favorite safe & clean home, skin and beauty products:
Face & Body
Organic Chia Seed Facial Oil, Cocokind (my absolute favorite face oil!)
Basic Organics L-Lysine Balm (I use it on my lips)
I purchased a lot of these products on ThriveMarket. If you haven’t heard of ThriveMarket, it’s a cross between a Sams Club/Cost Co (steep discounts). and Whole Foods (organic, clean products). It makes shopping for products like this easy and less expensive. They also do a gift-with-purchase almost everyday, which makes the deal even sweeter. AND new shoppers get an additional 25% off their first order. I’d highly suggest. You can click and shop here (and full disclosure, if you do, I get a little kick-back to keep this blog up and running).
Have a great weekend!
